Best time of the year to visit Cancun
Cancun is a favorite destination for tourists around the world for various reasons, whether it is because of the beautiful weather, its lovely white sand beaches with warm, emerald water, or the delicious food, gastronomical experiences available, and the vibrant nightlife and parties; there is more than one reason to want to visit Cancun!
Now, if you ask what is the best time to visit Cancun, everyone will have a different take, from visiting during high season or off season, or during spring versus winter. See, for us, any time is a fantastic time to visit Cancun. However, we encourage you to consider the time and month of the year that best suits your expectations, so that you can experience everything Cancun has to offer and have the best holiday ever.
Cancun is located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, in the southern part of Mexico, in the Mexican Caribbean; Cancun is very close to amazing sites such as Chichén Itzá, Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and of course, the Riviera Maya. All of this makes Cancun a perfect place that combines the perks and relaxation of a tropical destination with world class hospitality and amazing places to visit.
Because of its unique location, Cancun offers a warm, beautiful weather during most of the year, with an average annual temperature of 78º F. During the warmer months, such as in late spring and summer, highs reach the 90º F and nighttime lows are among the 50º F and 60º F. This tropical climate makes Cancun the perfect paradise to forget about cold weather and let the stress of daily life melt away.
What’s the Best Time to Visit Cancun, Mexico?
There is not a “best time to visit Cancun” per se. As it is true with many destinations, the best time to visit Cancun is closely related to what you are expecting from your trip. Do you want to enjoy the beaches and premises of your hotel all to yourself as you enjoy a relaxing time and bask on the natural beauty of Cancun without the intromission of tourists? Or do you want to meet people, have fun at the local bars, restaurants, and dance the night away in the electrifying nightlife of Cancun? Are you travelling solo, with your partner, family, or a group of friends? Do you want to relax or are you seeking fun, adventure, and spotting wildlife?
To that end, you might want to plan your visit to Cancun around certain seasons or times of the year, whether off season, Spring Break, or even during the summer months or winter holidays. It all depends on what you want to experience while visiting Cancun.
However, keep in mind that Cancun is an amazing destination all year long, and that every time of the year has its unique charm. In short: any time is the best time to visit Cancun!
What’s the Best Season to Visit Cancun?
Every season has different things to offer and to experience in Cancun. As we mentioned above, it all depends on what you are looking for. These are the different activities, benefits, and advantages of visiting during each season:
Spring in Cancun
Spring breakers, rejoice! Cancun is a hotspot for the young crowds who are looking to have fun and enjoy the sun (and the nightlife as well) during spring. The best time to enjoy the excitement of Spring Break is from mid-March to early April.
However, not all of spring in Cancun is dominated by these fun-seeking crowds. Late April and May coincide with what is often known as shoulder season, just between off season and peak season, and it offers less crowds, better deals and, of course, amazing activities such as diving and swimming at the cenotes or underwater caves, without the hassle of Spring Break crowds.
Also, spring in Cancun offers the amazing opportunity to experience the spring equinox at Chichén Itzá: on March 21st, the afternoon sun brings to life the “Feathered Serpent” or Kukulkán, making the effect of a serpent making its way down the side of the pyramid; a true spectacle just 2.5-hours away from Cancun.
Summer in Cancun
Unlike spring in Cancun, when the weather is warm but not humid, the summer months offer much more humidity with temperatures averaging 90º Fahrenheit. This is because summer is typically the start of the rainy season. However, most rains occur during the afternoon, and tend to be very light.
Most of the summer in Cancun is considered low season, which means that you can find the best deals on flights, trips, and hotels.
July and August in Cancun are the best months for enjoying water activities such as swimming and snorkeling, and you might be lucky enough to find some sea turtles and whale sharks!
Fall in Cancun
Fall in Cancun is a little hotter and rainier than usual, and this means that there are still very good deals and discounts to plan your trip for less.
Fall is also an amazing time to visit Cancun if you want to relax, as it is not as concurred as it is during high season; the only exception, though, is during Thanksgiving, as many U.S. tourists take the opportunity to escape the cold and soak up a little sun during their holiday.
Winter in Cancun
Winter in Cancun is considered high season, and is the busiest season with visitors escaping the cold weather from all over the world seeking to relax and swim in the warm turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean. Humidity is at its lowest during winter, so the weather is always nice and warm,
not only on the beach but on the archeological sites as well as in the jungle, making it an amazing time to explore the natural beauty of the region.
